Family Tree
I have always had a passion for my own genealogy.  Several years ago, my cousin-in-law compiled the first family tree for our family.  Over the past several years, I have been looking for options to publish the family tree on the web and allow individuals within the tree to manage the information.  This would be a much more reliable system than having one person administer everything.  Unfortunately, all the solutions I have found (including the more recent applications that integrate within Facebook) are somewhat "trivial" and lack many of the features I would expect.

As such, in 2005, I commenced work on the development of a web-based Family Tree system that would have all the features that I required.

In late 2007, I launched the site and provided the ability to have updates.  To see it now, you can follow the link below.

The site features the following:
  • Secure authentication and login
  • Ability for individuals to modify any record
  • All changes are recorded, indicating who made the change and when (Wiki-style)
  • Data is maintained as a GEDCOM file, so that it can be imported into almost any other genealogy application
  • It is possible to start a tree, by importing an existing GEDCOM file
  • "Sounds like" search for people's names - To allow for variations in the way people spell their names
  • Pure Java (J2EE) implementation - can be installed on any Tomcat server
Having devoted so much time to this endeavour, I have made the decision to open-source all the source code, to give back to the global community.  To do that, there are still several things I will need to clean up/fix/etc.  I will post updates to this project as I go.
